The Americano is based on the old 19th-century Italian cocktail Milano-Torino, which is basically a mix of Campari and Rosso Vermouth. As the story goes, when Americans visited Italy during Prohibition, they often asked for the drink to be watered down with Mineral or Soda Water, so the locals nicknamed it the Americano.
