Getting Lost On The Shores Of Lake Lahontan

Drew Record from Lost Lantern makes us the perfect long summer evening Bourbon Highball, On The Shores Of Lake Lahonta

When you think of independent Whiskey bottlers (especially if they are in the Scottish style), you often think of old-fashioned, traditional drams that need to be drunk straight, but the US bottlers Lost Lantern believe that how you drink your whiskey is up to you.

To demonstrate this, Drew Record, Lost Lantern Mixologist (and California State Manager), has created a cocktail, On The Shores Of Lake Lahontan, that shows how long, bright and refreshing a Bourbon cocktail can be.

Created with the brand’s Soaring Spice Straight Bourbon from Nevada’s Frey Ranch, this drink embraces spice from the Bourbon expression, as well as the Benedictine and Sarsparilla, to demonstrate the versatility of Bourbon.

Lost Lantern’s mission statement is to capture the complexity and depth of some of the smaller US distilleries. With cocktails like this, they can also show how long, refreshing highballs can be the perfect drink for those long spring and summer evenings.

Mix this up with Lost Lantern Soaring Spice Frey Ranch Nevada Straight Bourbon is a four-year-old, four-barrel, four-grain straight bourbon that has notes of clove, nutmeg, orange peel, cardamom, and allspice, a deep oak flavour, and a long, warming finish. This is straight bourbon whiskey at its finest: rich, oaky, spicy, and sweet, in perfect proportion.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Lost Lantern Soaring Spice Frey Ranch Nevada Straight Bourbon
  • 0.5 oz Benedictine
  • 4 oz Sarsaparilla soda
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

Fill a frosty mug with ice and add Lost Lantern Soaring Spice Bourbon and Benedictine. Stir both together, and then add sarsaparilla to the top of the glass and top with a pinch of the good sea salt. Garnish with a thin peel of lemon.

Tips from Drew:
Benedictine is a spicy herbal liqueur from France with notes of cinnamon, clove and ginger. If you don’t have a bottle, don’t fret. What else do you have that tastes like an apple pie? Consider cinnamon schnapps or a favourite amaro. Have fun experimenting here.
