The Monin Cup has yet again proved that more than just quality spirits go into making an award winning cocktail.
Held at Hilton’s Zeta Bar, the biannual Monin bartender competition was won by Kelham Waterfield of The Duke of Clarence with his cocktail Last Call Before Sunfall.
The competition was created as a platform for young, up and coming bartenders, with this year’s theme Mix Your Origins aiming to challenge young bartenders to let their creativity loose with native ingredients, local spirits and MONIN’s versatile and natural flavours.
Recognised internationally for their large range of quality syrups, Monin was founded in France in 1912. Branching out from Liqueurs to flavoured Syrups in the late 1920s/ early 1930s, the company quickly established themselves as a leader in quality fruit syrups.
The company produces over 120 flavours and exports to more than 140 countries. Their motto ‘La Passion de la Qualité’ (Passion For Quality) is still used today.
The winning cocktail utilised the flavours of Monin Honeycomb, as well as Dark Rum and Coffee Liqueur.
He will represent Australia at the Semi-Final in Kuala Lumpur in October and the three finalists from the Asia Pacific region will be sent to Paris to compete at the Global Final in December.
Flavoursome and easy to prepare, this is a perfect cocktail to try this weekend for a few friends at your home bar.
To create the Banana-infused Dark Rum, simply cut up a ripe Banana, place the slices into a mason jar and top with a 7.50z of Dark Rum. Store in a cool, dark place for 24 hours and then strain. This will provide enough Dark Rum for cocktails for you and four friends.
