PATRÓN ENCOURAGES AUSSIE BARTENDERS TO FIND THEIR INNER PERFECTIONIST(S)

September 30,2022

Local boy, Harrison Kenney, the current global Patrón Perfectionist(s), would be the first to encourage all Australian bartenders to grab a shaker and enter the competition that has changed his life and skills, before entries close at the end of next week.

The brand is asking bartenders to create a recipe reflecting their homes and the unwavering commitment to quality that goes into every drop of PATRÓN tequila. The entry challenge, called Hometown Hero, will require entrants to develop a cocktail that blends PATRÓN Silver tequila with the bartender’s local culture, using ingredients from a prescribed list, the Pantry. The initial entry submissions will be judged on appeal, appearance, inspiration, and originality.

Bartenders were invited to attend Academia PATRÓN Perfectionists state roadshows hosted by Joey Chisolm (PATRÓN Tequila Execution Manager) and Harrison Kenney (Global PATRÓN Perfectionist Winner 2022) showcasing the educational module “Discovering Deliciousness”. Focusing on flavours, ingredients, techniques, topical trends in the tequila category and mixology, the Academia PATRÓN Perfectionists modules support professional growth, as well as the preparation for the PATRÓN Perfectionists competition entry.

“It was a privilege to win the prestigious Global Patrón Perfectionists title for a cocktail that I created to represent Australia, a country with one of the greatest bar scenes in the world,” said Kenny. “I can’t wait to see the calibre of entries for this year and how the talented bartenders of Australia showcase their hero ingredients. Bartenders – if you are thinking about taking part, do it.”

Following the education and entry stages, each participating country will judge the cocktail creations to shortlist up to 10 bartenders, who will compete in the national final due to take place in November in Sydney. This year’s national finals will engage bartenders across various topics and challenges. The bartenders’ cumulative scores across the challenges will determine the national winner in each market.

This year, a special Wild Card Entry will also be selected by a global judge from the contestants of the national finals. All national winners and the Wild Card winner will go on to the much-coveted global finals experience taking place at Hacienda Patrón, Mexico, in March 2023. During the global finals, bartenders will undertake a new series of challenges, testing each part of a bartender’s skillset.

Entries are open until 10:59 AEDT on 7th October 2022 via  the entry portal academiapatron.com

BOOTHBY HAS ANNOUNCED THE AUSTRALIAN DRINK OF THE YEAR

November 30,2022

Sydney’s Double Deuce Lounge played host to some of the best in the Australian Bar Industry as Boothby presented its Drink of the Year Awards and Top 50 drinks list.

“The awards are a great snapshot of the way we drink at bars in 2022,” said drinks writer and founder of Boothby, Sam Bygrave. “The desire behind the awards is to spotlight the drinks created by our bartenders, who — if you ask me — can hold their weight against the very best in the world. Right now, and despite everything our bartenders have been through since 2020, there’s no place better to drink at than Australia.”

The winner of the Boothby Drink of the Year 2022, presented by Patrón Tequila, is the Africola by Michael Chiem at the ground-breaking Sydney bar, PS40. The drink is an innovative play on hot and cold temperatures. PS40 and Chiem also picked up the number 5 spot on the list with their Salted Piña Colada.

The Drinks List of the Year presented by The London Essence Co was awarded to Melbourne bar Byrdi for its innovative, convention-challenging but ultimately delicious drinks list, created by bartender and owner Luke Whearty (pictured). Whearty also picked up the number 4 spot on the list on the night with his drink Snow and the number 17 spot with Fallen Fruit.

And after two weeks of voting by the public on boothby.com.au, the People’s Drink of the Year, presented by Orlando, was awarded to Eoin Kenny from Long Chim in Perth for his drink, Lychee. Lychee was a flavour employed by several bartenders throughout the year, but it was Kenny’s take — a beautiful, clear, tall drink — that the public embraced.

Some 50 percent of the Top 50 drinks came from NSW; over 20 percent came from Victoria, with Brisbane picking up four spots, Adelaide getting three, Perth scoring two, and Darwin, Canberra, Hobart, and the Gold Coast coming in at one spot a piece.

“The Top 50 reads like a guide to the very best bars Australia has to offer,” continued Bygrave. “Whether it’s up in Darwin at Hanky Panky Lounge, down in Hobart at Rude Boy, or over in Perth at Foxtrot Unicorn — we’ve got some of the best bars in the world.”

Created by award-winning Venezuelan animator Igor Bastidas, the campaign is part of to parent company, Diagio’s commitment to changing the way the world drinks for the better by promoting moderation and addressing the harmful use of alcohol.

“I wanted to capture the energy of a diverse group of people who are making the right decision to moderate their drinking in a wholly original and enthusiastic way that is also Wildly Responsible,” explained Bastidas “In my work, I choose to be disruptive by using simple and straight narratives, and I think that it is entertainingly reflected in these videos.”

Kate Gibson, Global Director of Diageo in Society, said: “Drinking in moderation is key all year round, but this year’s campaign, while fun and playful in nature, is a reminder that small changes can help you celebrate in a ‘wildly responsible’ way.”

Stephanie Jacoby, Global Smirnoff Senior Vice President, said: “I’m so proud to see Smirnoff at the helm of this season’s Drops of Advice campaign as the sponsor of our ongoing responsible drinking commitments.
