Adam Fournier has been named as the 2021 U.S. World Class Bartender of the Year, after the first-ever digital version of the competition.

The United States Bartenders’ Guild (USBG) Presents World Class sponsored by Diageo tested the strength and talent of the nation’s top 50 bartenders over the five-day, four-challenge competition.


Fournier impressed judges with his innovative creations, keen attention to detail and creative showmanship to earn himself the honour of representing the U.S. in the global finals later this year in Madrid, Spain.

“It’s an incredible honour to be named U.S. Bartender of the Year. This success is not only my own, it’s a result of the amazing community around me, my World Class Collective,” said Adam Fournier. “After entering my first USBG Presents World Class sponsored by Diageo program five years ago, it has been part of my life ever since.

“The changes this year made it one of my favourite iterations of the competition because it allowed me to watch all of the amazing work that went into it. The level of talent from my fellow competitors was truly inspiring and helps me appreciate this win even more and want to represent them well as I continue my journey to the Global Finals.”

Two of Fournier’s award-winning cocktails are –

Concordia

Ingredients:

1 oz. Tanqueray 10

1 oz. Fino Sherry

1 oz. Almond Milk

1 oz. Concord Grape Juice

0.75 oz. Saba

0.5 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin. Whip with three ice cubes. Double strain over crushed ice in a 13.25 oz. Poco style glass. Garnish with a mint plouche and straw. Cap with more crushed ice and finish with three carbonated grapes.

Piñacillin

Ingredients

1.5 oz. Johnnie Walker Black Label

0.25 oz. Honey Syrup (2:1)

0.25 oz. Ginger Syrup (1:1)

0.5 oz. Fresh Lemon

0.5 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice

Instructions

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake with ice until fully diluted and aerated. Double strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. Using a spray bottle, mist the top of the drink with Lagavulin 16. Garnish with two trimmed pineapple fronds.

BAILEYS IRISH CREAM TO TRIAL PAPER-BASED BOTTLES AT WEEKEND FESTIVAL

Baileys, the Original Irish Cream Liqueur, has announced that it will trial 2,000 paper-based bottles in a mini (80mls) format at the Time Out Festival in Barcelona, Spain, this weekend.

The Dry-Molded Fiber bottle, which is 90% paper with a thin plastic liner and a foil seal, has been produced in partnership with PA Consulting.


The trial will test how well the bottles travel from the filling site in Ireland to Barcelona, along with how consumers interact with the material.

“Dry-moulded fibre bottles are a huge step forward, setting new standards in the world of more sustainable packaging,” explained Jamie Stone, Design and Innovation Expert at PA.

“PulPac’s dry-molded fiber technology has immense potential: not only is it water-saving, energy-efficient and recyclable, but it is also viable at commercial manufacturing speeds and scale,’ Stone continued.

Bailey’s parent company, Diageo, has been working on ways to develop more sustainable and desirable products through innovation, as Ewan Andrew, President of Global Supply Chain & Procurement and Chief Sustainability Officer at Diageo, believes consumers are becoming ‘more sustainability savvy.’

“When it comes to our packaging, we’re taking an approach of progress over perfection, knowing our packaging will need to evolve along with consumer needs and technological advancements,” he explained.

FIRST STANDALONE GREY GOOSE BAR OPENS IN MELBOURNE

Global Vodka brand Grey Goose has opened the doors to Le Martini, its first standalone bar, at Crown Melbourne.

Dedicated to its namesake – the Martini – the bar will feature bespoke cocktail menus created by international guest bartenders.


To celebrate the opening, Le Martini’s first guest bartender menu has been created by award-winning industry icon, Dale DeGroff.

FAWN WEAVER ANNOUNCES FIRST LOVE & WHISKEY: UNFILTERED TOUR DATES

It’s not very often that a book about alcohol makes the Amazon Top 100.

But Fawn Weaver’s Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and the Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest not only made it in, but with its pre-order announcement, the book soared to No. 17.


So, obviously, the book needed an equally ground-breaking book tour, which Weaving is providing with her, Love & Whiskey: Unfiltered Tour.

“This tour redefines the book event experience,” explained Weaver, CEO of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. “I am known for my transparency; I embrace spontaneity and genuine interactions.”

Set to provide ‘unique whiskey tastings, book signings, and engaging, truly unfiltered conversations’, the nationwide tour will feature weaver as well as Uncle Nearest distiller Victoria Eady Butler, who is four-time Master Blender of the Year.

Through the pages, Weaver’s vision for the future of America’s first spirits empire to be built by a woman or person of colour, and her personal story from homeless teen to triumph are told.

Green, a formerly enslaved Black man and skilled whiskey maker, served as the world’s first known African American master distiller and the original master distiller for Jack Daniel.

THE WORLD'S 50 BEST BARS RETURNS TO SPAIN FOR 2024 AWARDS

After holding the awards ceremony in Singapore last year, The World’s 50 Best Bars returns to Spain for its 16th edition.

In 2022, the awards were held in Barcelona. The 2024 awards will see Spain’s largest city and central capital, Madrid, play host.


The list of The World’s 50 Best Bars will be unveiled at a grand ceremony on Tuesday, 22nd October.

With its mission to showcase the planet’s finest cocktail cities, 50 Best will unite the global bar community in Madrid to recognise the achievements of the best bars in the world.

“We are delighted to bring The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 to the vibrant streets of Madrid, a city long renowned for its outstanding hospitality,” explained Emma Sleight, Head of Content for The World’s 50 Best Bars.

“We look forward to gathering this incredible community together once more to honour the innovation, creativity, and unparalleled achievements of the world’s most exceptional mixology and to ignite the curiosity of cocktail lovers around the globe.”

As usual, the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 will be anonymously voted for by a gender-balanced Academy of more than 700 bartenders, consultants, writers, and cocktail specialists from around the world. Deloitte will independently adjudicate the results.

The Bartenders’ Feast, hosted the evening before the ceremony for those talented individuals whose bars feature in this year’s ranking, will again return. As well as special awards such as Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award and Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award.

Additionally, over the next few months, bars and bartenders from around the world, whether they feature in the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars or not, will also be invited to nominate themselves for the 50 Best Bars Roku Scholarship 2024, the Bareksten Best Bar Design Award and/or Siete Misterios Best Cocktail Menu Award.
