RON ZACAPA CREATES FOUR-PART COLLECTION

Guatemalan rum Ron Zacapa has unveiled a new four-part collection comprising limited edition bottlings of its Zacapa 23 expression.

The first instalment in the four-part Heavenly Cask series is Zacapa 23 La Doma, The Taming Cask.

The limited-edition bottling will be followed every four years by a new release to create four collectable special editions.

Using Ron Zacapa’s ‘sistema solera’ ageing process, rums aged between six and 24 years were blended and matured in barrels that used to hold American whiskies, Sherry and Pedro Ximénez wines.

The ex-American whiskey casks were used to ‘tame’ and ‘give shape’ to the unaged spirit immediately after distillation before the second charred cask added more character to the spirit.

The third cask, ex-Sherry, brought ‘new aromas’, before the fourth and final cask, ex-Pedro Ximénez, added ‘sweetness’ to the liquid.

Tasting notes for Zacapa 23 La Doma, The Taming Cask include fresh and honeyed sugarcane and tropical flavours of pineapple and banana.

Lorena Vásquez, master blender, said: “Zacapa La Doma is all about our ‘taming cask’ – the raw Zacapa spirit is forged from the finest fermented virgin sugar cane honey resting in ex-American whisky casks.

“This extracts the most extraordinary flavours and aromas that the cask has to offer, creating a rum with a rich and fruity palate with hints of vanilla.

“The perfect way to enjoy Zacapa La Doma is neat, or over a large ice cube and garnished with fresh or flambéed pineapple or a slice of flambéed banana. I also recommend complementing the serve with a sweet pairing of either walnut or pineapple tart.”

ABER FALLS RELEASES ITS FIRST WELSH WHISKY

Aber Falls, the first distillery to produce Whisky in North Wales in over a century, has released its inaugural single malt.

The new expression uses 100% Welsh malted barley and rock-filtered water from the Aber Falls waterfall. The distillery, owned by Halewood Artisanal Spirits, also produces Welsh gin and vodka.

This inaugural release was matured along the coastline of North Wales in a combination of wooden barrels, including American and European oak, Spanish Sherry, virgin oak and orange wine casks, the distillery’s setting offers a “remote microclimate, creating the ideal conditions to influence the character of the whisky”.

Dr Kirstie McCallum, who joined Halewood as master blender this year, said: “One of the big advantages of producing whisky in Wales is having more scope to experiment with a variety of casks, and our wood strategy has also been a key contributor to the finished liquid, which we’re extremely pleased with for a three-year-old bottling.”

Designed to capture the ‘spirit of North Wales’, the expression is said to demonstrate the distillery’s distinctive character, with James Wright, managing director at Aber Falls saying the whisky “brings together the very best Welsh ingredients”.

Bottled at 46% ABV, the whisky has hints of tropical fruit and a nose of sweet hay and cut grass. The palate brings notes of dark chocolate and golden syrup followed by cream and vanilla on the finish.

ARDGOWAN DISTILLERY DEBUTS SHIPWRIGHT WHISKY

Scottish producer Ardgowan Distillery has released Shipwright, a blend of single malts sourced from Speyside and Highland distilleries.

The second whisky in its Clydebuilt series, Shipwright has been matured in first-fill oloroso Sherry casks and offers scents of leather, marzipan, tobacco and sandalwood.

Distillery chief executive, Martin McAdam, said: “The feedback we’ve had from Coppersmith gives us great confidence in our ability to craft premium whisky with broad appeal. I think it is our best dram yet.”

The Ardgowan Distillery Clydebuilt series showcases the skills of master whisky maker, Max McFarlane: “It is a truly sumptuous dram, made to ignite your imagination of far off lands.

On the nose, warm aromas come in waves, bringing to mind the precious cargoes of the East, with scents of marzipan, leather, Ceylon tea, dried spices, tobacco and sandalwood.

This journey continues on the palate, as bright complexities of orange peel and rich dark notes of black cherries and treacle come to the fore.

Shipwright then settles gently, dry at first, then gliding into lingering spicy notes with hints of an old leather armchair. A wonderful elegant whisky to savour alone or share with friends.”

HAYMAN’S INTRODUCES EXOTIC CITRUS GIN

UK gin distillery Hayman’s has released a new expression infused with exotic citrus flavours that include notes of kumquat, pomelo, Persian lime and mandarin.

“As the first London gin distilling family to include citrus as a key botanical, we are simply adding a delicious exotic citrus flavour to our style of gin, said Hayman’s co-owner James Hayman.

“At a time when the consumer is increasingly more conscious about natural ingredients, this is a gin with additional flavour that is naturally distilled from botanicals. The flavour profile of Exotic Citrus derives from the hand-peeled and sundried fruit,” Hayman continued.

The 41.1% ABV gin is made using a two-day process, whereby the peels’ citrusy flavours and oils are distilled to complement the citrus-forward style of the family-run distillery’s signature London Distilled Gin.

The brand suggests that the Hayman’s Exotic Citrus is best enjoyed over ice with premium tonic water, and garnished with a slice of fresh orange and sprig of fresh basil.

With a distilling heritage stretching back to the 18th century, Hayman’s is one of the oldest names in UK gin. After a spell making its spirits in Essex, the brand moved to a new home in Balham, southwest London, in 2018.

Lagavulin Has Launched Second Nick Offerman Expression

Scottish Single Malt distillery Lagavulin has yet again teamed up with US actor Nick Offerman, this time launching an 11-year-old whisky finished in Guinness beer casks.

Ahead of World Whisky Day (15 May) & Father’s Day (20 June – US & UK), the limited-edition 11-year-old Lagavulin Offerman Edition. was aged for four months in former Guinness beer casks from Ireland’s Open Gate Brewery.

The expression has notes of ‘intense peat and charred wood’ along with hints of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and caramel from the Guinness casks.

To celebrate its launch, Offerman has unveiled the fifth instalment in his Lavagulin: My Tales of Whisky video series.

Titled ‘Nick Offerman’s Father’s Day Part Five’, the new video stars Offerman and his father Ric, and playfully highlights how the whisky was created before concluding with the duo enjoying a dram in a pub.

“The opportunity to collaborate on this truly sublime, smoky giggle-juice renews my gratitude for the simple things in life, like a father’s love, and the good manners he taught me,” said Offerman.
