PORTOBELLO ROAD DISTILLERY CREATES WORLD FIRST ASPARAGUS VODKA

UK distillery, Portobello Road, has created a farm to bottle limited-edition British Asparagus vodka, which it claims is the “world’s first”.

Coming 7 years after the brand released its Asparagus Gin, the Asparagus Vodka has a more intense flavour and features no filtration or additives, to up-scale classic cocktails such as the Negroni or Martini.


“The fact that it was a gin and therefore required to be juniper-led meant the actual asparagus flavour was quite subtle,” said Portobello Road Distillery co-founder Jake Burger. ” So when we stepped into vodka production, we wanted to revisit the ingredient, but this time in a product where the flavour could really stand out and sing in mixed drinks”.

With an “earthiness and nuttiness” to the vodka’s flavour, the flavour of asparagus arrives early and lingers long, with a surprising amount of sweetness.

Burger added: “We’re really excited to bring this world-first to bartenders and introduce a flavour that isn’t widely used. We are seeing a real desire from customers for more savoury drinks. It is something that we have noticed in our West London venue, The Distillery, and it is perhaps in response to the overly sweet, sugary spirits that have flooded the market in recent years.”

Expected to be released annually, at the start of asparagus season, the expression has been released in a limited run of 600 bottles.

TEELING RELEASES 3RD EDITION OF ITS WONDERS OF WOOD SERIES

Irish Whiskey Distillers Teeling has released the much anticipated third edition of its Wonders Of Wood series.

Undergoing a full maturation in Virgin Swedish Oak, the expression offers notes of candied ginger and almond treacle.


The expression has been distilled by the brand’s master distiller/blender, Alex Chasko, and presents a genuinely distinct profile within the realm of Irish Whiskey.

Designed to showcase the impact of unique cask finishing, the series utilises Teeling’s Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. It is crafted from a recipe of 50% malted barley and 50% unmalted barley and then fully matured in unique wood styles from around the world.

This third expression presents light floral notes with citrus fruits, hints of caramel and cooked barley on the nose, and a rich and full-flavoured taste with herbs, candied ginger, almond and treacle. The finish is dry with light black pepper spice and nutmeg.

Previous iterations of Teeling’s Wonders of Wood series were aged in Virgin Chinkapin Oak and Virgin Portugese Oak, respectively.

LAPHROAIG SHOWCASE THE EFFECT OF LONGER MATURATIONS WITH ELEMENTS 2.0

Laphroaig has unveiled the second release in its experimental Elements series: a bold, non-chill filtered whisky that shows the flavour impact of an extended fermentation process.

Moving beyond the traditional approach to distillation, Elements 2.0 looks at the impact of disrupting the brand’s usual 55-hour fermentation process to uncover different aspects of Laphroaig’s bold character.


Pushing the boundaries with up to 115 hours in the fermentation process, the extended time creates a secondary fermentation that begins to happen inside the washback. This means more tropical, fruity flavours alongside the smoky signature.

“Our Laphroaig Elements Series is all about blending years of traditional whisky-making with new, progressive techniques,” explains distillery manager Barry MacAffer. “There’s no whisky that encapsulates Islay quite like Laphroaig – but this hasn’t stopped us experimenting in a way that preserves our iconic character.”

“Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is an unexpected fruitier whisky with the same peaty character you’ve come to know and love – made possible by over double the typical fermentation period. I’m keen to hear what our friends think of this whisky, which follows in the successful footsteps of Elements 1.0,” MacAffer continued.

The expression on the nose offers fruity and subtly coastal aromas, stewed apples, vanilla custard, orange peel, and subtle peaty notes. The palate features fruity, sweet and salty notes of green apples, honey, cream soda, and a soft peatiness. The sweet finish features an increasingly warming smokiness.

COCONUT CARTEL EXPANDS ITS PORTFOLIO WITH BLANCO EXPRESSION

Miami-based Rum brand Coconut Cartel has announced the launch of its latest expression, Coconut Cartel Blanco.

Capturing the essence of the Dominican Republic’s finest sugarcane and locally harvested coconuts, Coconut Cartel stands apart as the only brand to use fresh coconut water in the process of proofing rum, resulting in a distinctive and refreshing flavour profile.


The Blanco expression carefully blends unaged pot still rum sourced from the distillery’s own sugarcane farms in the Dominican Republic with one-year-old column still rum aged in American White oak ex-bourbon barrels.

Kentucky whiskey brand Wild Turkey has announced the latest addition to its highly collectable Master’s Keep series with the release of Triumph.

With a name that speaks to the contemporary revival of rye whiskey, Triumph features sweet honey and clove notes that transition to dark chocolate, dates and spice with a rich mocha-coffee and black pepper finish.


Bottled at 104-proof, Triumph is the second rye whiskey to be released within the Master’s Keep series, and is the oldest age-stated rye ever released by the brand.

HENNESSY LAUNCHES LONG-AWAITED MASTER BLENDER'S SELECTION NO 5

After a three-year break, French Cognac brand Hennessy has unveiled the next instalment of its Master Blender’s Selection series, Master Blender’s Selection No 5.

This Limited-Edition expression, bottled at 43% ABV, is composed of truly unique, unreplicatable blends that will never be replicated. This unique liquid is the result of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation, curated under the expert eye of Hennessy’s 8th-generation Master Blender, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde.


“I wanted to pay tribute to the artisans behind the scenes – exclusive Hennessy distillers who are experts and share with us, year after year, first-rate eaux-de-vie remarkable for their purity, finesse and potential,” explained Fillioux de Gironde

“Some have been with us almost since the Maison was founded over 200 years ago. It generally takes many years of training between generations for the son or daughter of the current distiller to take over.

“It’s with these future generations that we’ll continue to grow and offer cognacs rooted in our terroir yet deeply contemporary in nature,” Fillioux de Gironde continued.

The Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 requires an unprecedented eaux-de-vie selection process, followed by a maturing process of at least seven years in French oak barrels. It offers aromatic complexity. Renaud has selected and combined different eaux-de-vie produced by these 18 unique families of distillers, merging their characters and personalities to create an unmatched cognac.

On the nose, it presents a sophisticated world with notes of spice and candied orange, while the palate is smooth, with delightful pastry notes of cocoa and sweet spices, a comforting creaminess. Then come notes of light tobacco and candied orange.

“Being the 8th generation Master Blender is a tremendous honour,” explained Fillioux de Gironde, “and I feel privileged to be able to continue the craft that was passed down to me by my uncle Yann Fillioux.
