NEW RYE WHISKEY BRAND RELEASES THREE EXPRESSIONS

The new Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey brand, Coalition is releasing three 100% rye whiskey expression that have been finished in ex-Bordeaux wine barrels.

Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Margaux Barriques is bottled at 45.4% ABV and features ‘delicate and gentle flavours of red fruit and floral aromas’.


The brand’s Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Pauillac Barriques has an ABV of 46.3% and flavours of black fruit and spice, while Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Sauternes Barriques (47.1% ABV) offers ‘velvety flavours of dried fruit and honey with an engaging sweet spice’.

The brand, developed by former Russian Standard USA CEO Leonid Yangarber, alongside Kentucky Artisan Distillery owner Steve Thompson and wine consultant Ludwig Vanneron, comprises a blend of five-year-old rye produced by the Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood, Kentucky.

Thompson said: “While most rye whiskeys use malted barley or added corn, Coalition Whiskey is made completely from rye. It’s a more expensive way to go, but there was truly no other way to create that truly deep, rich and spicy flavour we knew would be the ideal match for our velvety Bordeaux wine barrel finishing.”

After maturing in American oak for five years, the whiskey is then transferred to ex-wine casks selected by Vanneron. Coalition has bottled whiskeys finished in Margaux barriques, Pauillac barriques, and Sauternes barriques.

“It took the inspection of nearly 150 barrels just to find the perfect 25 we are using to finish our rye whiskey,” Vanneron said.

Yangarber added: “Our goal with Coalition Whiskey is to coax even more flavour out of our 100% rye whiskey. A keen understanding of the science behind rye whiskey served as the foundation for this grand experiment.

LAPHROAIG SHOWCASE THE EFFECT OF LONGER MATURATIONS WITH ELEMENTS 2.0

Laphroaig has unveiled the second release in its experimental Elements series: a bold, non-chill filtered whisky that shows the flavour impact of an extended fermentation process.

Moving beyond the traditional approach to distillation, Elements 2.0 looks at the impact of disrupting the brand’s usual 55-hour fermentation process to uncover different aspects of Laphroaig’s bold character.


Pushing the boundaries with up to 115 hours in the fermentation process, the extended time creates a secondary fermentation that begins to happen inside the washback. This means more tropical, fruity flavours alongside the smoky signature.

“Our Laphroaig Elements Series is all about blending years of traditional whisky-making with new, progressive techniques,” explains distillery manager Barry MacAffer. “There’s no whisky that encapsulates Islay quite like Laphroaig – but this hasn’t stopped us experimenting in a way that preserves our iconic character.”

“Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is an unexpected fruitier whisky with the same peaty character you’ve come to know and love – made possible by over double the typical fermentation period. I’m keen to hear what our friends think of this whisky, which follows in the successful footsteps of Elements 1.0,” MacAffer continued.

The expression on the nose offers fruity and subtly coastal aromas, stewed apples, vanilla custard, orange peel, and subtle peaty notes. The palate features fruity, sweet and salty notes of green apples, honey, cream soda, and a soft peatiness. The sweet finish features an increasingly warming smokiness.

The Blanco expression carefully blends unaged pot still rum sourced from the distillery’s own sugarcane farms in the Dominican Republic with one-year-old column still rum aged in American White oak ex-bourbon barrels.

After a three-year break, French Cognac brand Hennessy has unveiled the next instalment of its Master Blender’s Selection series, Master Blender’s Selection No 5.

This Limited-Edition expression, bottled at 43% ABV, is composed of truly unique, unreplicatable blends that will never be replicated. This unique liquid is the result of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation, curated under the expert eye of Hennessy’s 8th-generation Master Blender, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde.


“I wanted to pay tribute to the artisans behind the scenes – exclusive Hennessy distillers who are experts and share with us, year after year, first-rate eaux-de-vie remarkable for their purity, finesse and potential,” explained Fillioux de Gironde

ROUND 2 SPIRITS LAUNCHES VODKA DISTILLED FROM BLUE WEBER AGAVE

A new Texas-based venture, Round 2 Spirits, has launched Weber Ranch 1902 Vodka, exclusively distilled from 100% Blue Weber Agave.

“By volume, vodka is the largest spirits category in the U.S., but let’s be honest, it’s been a long time since there was any meaningful innovation or true disruption in this space,” explained Lee Applbaum, President and COO of Round 2 Spirits.


“Weber Ranch Vodka is one of the most groundbreaking new products created in this category, and delivers a smooth, clean flavor profile unlike our competitors, largely because of the superior-quality Blue Weber Agave. Better ingredients are key to making a better product, and that’s absolutely true in our case.”

Weber Ranch Vodka marks a significant departure for a spirit commonly made from wheat, corn, or potatoes that take just a few months to harvest, compared to Blue Weber Agave which takes up to seven years to mature and is hand-harvested in Jalisco, Mexico.

Beginning its journey in Jalisco, Mexico, the agave is hand-harvested and distilled in Jalisco, before being transported to the Weber Ranch Distillery in Muenster, Texas. Once there, the liquid is further distilled in proprietary copper pot and column stills, filtered, and bottled.

The Vodka’s unique character is created through this second distillation and filtration with the addition of water from the local Trinity Aquifer.

The Vodka is naturally 100% gluten, carb, and additive free from garden to glass, and is said to exhibit an extraordinarily unique and clean taste profile that retains all the bright citrus notes from the agave, yet creates a velvety smooth mouthfeel unlike any other vodka.
