GOSLING RUM RELEASES OCEAN AGED BERMUDA RUM WITH SPIRITED SEAS

Global Rum brand Gosling has taken its spirit onto the water with the release of its first ocean-aged rum, Spirited Seas.

In the belief that rough seas make smooth rum, Goslings sent 60 once-used bourbon barrels filled with a proprietary blend of aged dark Bermuda rum on board the Oleander, the container ship known as the lifeline of Bermuda.

The brand, which has been ageing and blending rum since 1806, saw its liquid travel for over 40 weeks, clocking up nearly 60,000 miles so that the rum could interact with the charred American white oak over every wave.

“For the first time, we let go of the ageing process and let mother nature take the reins on the open ocean,” says Malcolm Gosling Jr., eighth-generation rum maker. “The stormy seas and air had an extraordinary effect on the ageing rum blend.

“Extreme changes in weather forced the rum to expand in warmer climates and contract in colder temperatures,” Gosling continued. “The result is an elegant and complex rum that will be a prized addition to any premium aged spirit collector’s shelf.”

WYOMING WHISKEY CELEBRATES A DECADE WITH STRAIGHT BOURBON RELEASE

Super-premium brand Wyoming Whiskey has released its oldest product to date, a Straight Bourbon Whiskey, to celebrate a decade at the stills.

The expression is a collaboration between founding Master Distiller Steve Nally and Master Blender Nancy Fraley and sees the rare 10-year-old rye bourbon made from 20 of the rarest casks at the distillery that were filled in November and December of 2011.

“Over the last ten years, these barrels have quietly evolved into something extraordinary,” said Wyoming Whiskey Co-Founder David DeFazio. “The 10-Year Anniversary Edition is in a class of its own. We are blown away by the quality and complexity of this product. It’s memorable.”

Wyoming Whiskey 10-Year Anniversary Edition Rye Bourbon features a mash bill of 68% Corn, 20% Rye, and 12% Malted Barley.

Aged for 10.5 years and bottled at 48% ABV, the whiskey offers aromas of rye manhattan cocktails with brandied cherries, medjool dates in thick syrup, cayenne pepper-candied pecans, and baklava drizzled with orange blossom honey.

The palate delivered candied yams with pecans and toasted marshmallows, black currant liqueur, sweet cornbread muffins with honey butter, and cinnamon toast with blackberry-maple syrup. The finish finds lingering notes of dark dried fruit mingled with warming brown baking spices.

North Carolina artisan distillery Chemist Spirits has collaborated with Biltmore Estate to release its inaugural Biltmore Single Malt Whiskey.

Handcrafted with estate-grown Calypso barley aged in new oak barrels, the elegant rose-gold tinted expression is further finished in Biltmore Sangiovese barrels before being bottled at 47% ABV.

“Biltmore single malt whiskey is an heirloom-quality whiskey with an artful flavour profile that is smooth yet complex. This hand-crafted whiskey is designed to enjoy neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail,” said Debbie Word, founder, owner and distiller at Chemist Spirits.

Biltmore Single malt Whiskey is dominated on the nose by butterscotch and caramelized sugar with notes of maple syrup, pralines, candied pecans, dates, and syrupy stewed plums.

On the palate, delicate spices beautifully integrate with the soft fruits, dried apricots, honey, and vanilla sugar and a sweet smooth creaminess which is complemented with hints of butterscotch and cherry syrup, with lingering fine-ground pepper and polished oak on the finish.

ILEGAL MEZCAL RELEASES LIMITED-EDITION 7-YEAR-OLD AÑEJO

Infamous Mexican Mezcal brand Ilegal is set to release its new, limited-edition, 7-year-old añejo expression.

Known for introducing the world to aged mezcal with its Reposado and Añejo expressions, the brand has released the new Limited Edition 7-Year Añejo to further showcase the innovation and artisanal craft of barrel-ageing.

“Our mission at Ilegal has always been to produce the highest quality mezcal while honouring the traditions of the category and the Mescaleros that craft it,” said John Rexer, Founder and CEO of Ilegal.

THE MACALLAN RELEASES WWII DISTILLED WHISKY

Global Whisky brand The Macallan has added a single malt Scotch, The Macallan 77 Years Old, to its Red Collection, a range of rare single malt Scotch whiskies.

Distilled early in the last year of WWII, the expression is among the world’s oldest Scotch whiskies and is one of the oldest bottlings released by the brand.

“The Macallan 77 Years Old is an incredible new high-aged guest expression for The Red Collection, which has been crafted from some of the world’s oldest and rarest casks,” said Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan master whisky maker. “It is a peerless single malt whisky that has slowly matured over seven decades until it reached peak perfection.”

Laid down in hand-picked oak casks and left to mature for 77 years, the wood has shaped the unique character of the expression, delivering the natural colour, distinctive aromas, and full flavours of this aged single malt. The result is a beautiful balance of citrus fruits with hints of woodsmoke and antique oak open on the nose, paired with sweet notes of raisin and plump, chewy dates.

Extremely rich and resinous, The Macallan 77 Years Old has sumptuous baked custard, crystalised ginger, marmalade, sticky treacle, and sweet smoke open on the palate before moving into a medley of dried fruit. The finish is long with sweet woodsmoke, with the traditional flavour of Cherry Bakewell and the linger of tropical fruits.

In keeping with previous releases in the collection, the new expression is encased in a handcrafted oak presentation box, created in the UK, using the same sustainable European oak used to craft The Macallan’s oak casks.

The box has been upholstered with sustainably sourced, soft red Scottish leather from Bridge of Weir Leather. The bottle itself has been hand finished and signed by The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell.
