Camus Launched Cognac Matured At Sea

Embracing the romance of transatlantic travel, Cognac brand Camus have unveiled a new expression that has undergone maturation at sea.

Called Camus Caribbean Expedition, the expression has been aged for four years in France before being loaded onto a ship for the transatlantic journey to Barbados in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies.

Ten sealed casks of Cognac were loaded onto the De Gallant tall ship which uses traditional wind propulsion for the 45 day journey.

Received by Richard Seale, master distiller at Four Square, the barrels then underwent a year of maturation in the tropical climate conditions.

Camus believes the Cognac’s exposure to numerous environmental factors, such as motion, temperature change, humidity and air pressure, have enhanced its aromatic notes.

Bottled at 43.3% ABV, the tasting notes for the expression include aromas of banana, pear, coco bean and rancio, leading to flavours of exotic fruits and soft sultanas on the palate.

A total of 4,500 bottles of Camus Caribbean Expedition will be released on 1 September 2020.

Australian Margarita mix company, Estamos has launched a new tropical flavour, Passionfruit, to help you make the perfect margarita.

“We have been working behind the scenes on this flavour for quite some time following the overwhelming success of our two current flavours: Watermelon and Cucumber Cooler,” said Estamos founder, Britney Chu. “With Freedom day here and the approaching hot months, we thought this would be the perfect time to launch our own version of Summer in a bottle.”

Born under the Bondi sun, Estamos serves as a flavour amplifier, bringing balance and unparalleled freshness to the mixture of your margarita. In addition, it proudly boasts between 2-4 grams of sugar (from the fruit) per serving, while other mixers on the shelves can have up to 20 grams of added sugar.

With Summer on its way, there’s no better time to get reacquainted with this classic cocktail. Whether you’re feeling pressed for time or want to spice it up, just-add-tequila mixers can really save the day, especially when they are done right.

Estamos has also teamed up with Care Australia, an international aid organisation, and will be donating 10% of proceeds to support their Leftemap Sista (meaning ‘lifting up our women and girls’). This project helps women and girls in Vanuatu, just 3 and 1⁄2 hours away from Sydney, live without the constant fear of violence, earn an income, and make their own decisions about their lives.

“At Estamos, we are all about women uplifting other women,” outlined Chu. “I couldn’t be more inspired to be supporting this group and feel incredibly passionate about bringing this to the forefront during our launch. It is one more reason to feel guilt-free about your Estamos Margaritas this Summer.”

Jameson has unveiled a new limited-edition whiskey, Jameson Black Barrel Proof, matured in a combination of American oak, sherry casks, and double charred ex-bourbon barrels

Made from pot still and grain whiskey has “an even deeper flavor experience,” says the brand. Bottled at 50% ABV without chill filtration, this is a rich, smooth Irish whiskey that showcases the benefit that barrel charring can add.

“Jameson Black Barrel is a triple distilled blend of our small batch grain and traditional single pot still Irish whiskey and boasts a robust spiciness, with flavours of butterscotch and fudge,” says Irish Distillers’ Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman. “Paying tribute to the cooper’s skill, maturing a portion of our whiskey in double charred barrels brings out sweet and spicy characteristics in abundance as it penetrates deeper into the charred oak.

“Like every family, Jameson is made up of individual characters with their own distinct personalities. Bottling Jameson Black Barrel at a higher strength is a great way to accentuate the already beloved characteristics of this unique whiskey to create a totally new experience for whiskey enthusiasts.

“So, if a full strength whiskey that’s bursting with aromas of toffee and fudge, complemented by a spicy character and a rich vanilla finish, sounds like it’s for you – or maybe even for someone you know – then you’ll find that Black Barrel Proof is a great addition to the Jameson family this Christmas. Slainte!”

On the nose, the whiskey offers butterscotch sweetness and creamy, toffee, fudge aromas. The palate features a rich smooth taste with a deep intensity and dialled up spicy notes, complemented by vanilla sweetness. The smooth and rich finish offers a hint of vanilla that lingers on the palate.

The founding House of Japanese Whisky, The House of Suntory, has announced the release of a specially-designed, limited edition bottle of Hibiki Japanese Harmony.

Adorned with painted flowers and flowing ribbons of water, this one-of-a-kind bottle was designed to represent the vital force of Japan’severchanging twenty-four seasons. This limited-edition bottle will be available in select global markets including the United States this month.

From its introduction in 1989, the Hibiki bottle is presented with 24 facets. The design symbolizes the 24 hours of a day, as well as the 24 seasons of the year in the traditional Japanese lunar calendar.

The 2021 limited edition pays tribute to the Ryusui-Hyakka (One-Hundred Flowers and Flowing Water). The design motif epitomizes the cyclical passage of time, showcasing the blossoms of the Japanese twenty-four seasons juxtaposed with the ever-changing flow of water that connects one passing season to another.

“The iconic Hibiki bottle has always been a representation of Japanese art and design, as represented by the many limited-edition series over the past ten years,” said Jon Potter, Managing Director of the House of Suntory. “This specially-designed bottle is not only the continuation of this artistic expression, it honors Hibiki and Suntory’s ethos to live in Harmony with nature. In 2021, this philosophy may echo with the world more than ever.”

The Hibiki bottle celebrates the much-loved blooms, colors and shapes of seasonal flowers that make the Japanese year so special. A deep appreciation for the seasons and a sensitivity for the passage of time accounts for the Japanese culture’s unique sense of harmony with nature. In tune with Suntory’s philosophy, the design bottle series is the next iteration of the brand’s continuous pursuit of harmony.

Florida-based Rum brand, Papa’s Pilar has released the first of its Legacy Edition rum expressions. Set to be an annual release, the dark rum blend has been created to celebrate Hemingway’s rich and multifaceted legacy.

Finished in both rye whiskey barrels and Amontillado Sherry casks, the liquid has been crafted to harness Hemingway’s spirit of adventure and appetite for greatness.

Bottled at 43% ABV, the release is a blend of dark rum of nine different, hand-selected rums from five sources – the Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela, Barbados and Florida – with ages up to 24 years old.

With an aroma of layered spice, chocolate, coffee and subtle hints of burnt sugar and vanilla, the rum has a full-bodied mouthfeel that starts with sweet Vanilla and dark chocolate, before finishing with touches of semi-dry spicy and oak.

Global Scotch Whiskey brand Johnnie Walker is releasing the fourth instalment in its limited-edition Ghost and Rare series with the Speyside “ghost” distillery of Pittyvaich.

The series has been designed to explore the distinct character of exceptional and very rare whiskies from Scotland’s most short-lived distilleries.

“It may only have thrived for a short period, but the whisky laid down by this distillery is something unmistakable,” said Jim Beveridge, Johnnie Walker Master Blender, as the brand announced the release of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Pittyvaich.

Pittyvaich, which opened in 1974 closed in 1993 after only 18 years of life, left a distinct and growing legacy and is now considered as a hidden gem whispered about the world over for its unique Speyside style.

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge and his team hand-selected two other “ghost” whiskies from the distilleries of Port Dundas and Carsebridge. He combined these with exceptionally rare Scotch from a quartet of Speyside distilleries including Mannochmore, Auchroisk, Cragganmore and Strathmill as well as the Highland whisky of Royal Lochnagar – crafting something exceptional.

Jim Beveridge continued, saying “We have waited patiently for that perfect moment when we turn our thoughts to this fleetingly rare gem of the whisky world. Its distinct autumnal character has always intrigued us and fired our imagination to create something really special that would pay tribute to the whisky makers of this Speyside distillery.”

When tasted, sweet, fruit notes of fresh apple gather with the autumnal flavours of Pittyvaich, beautifully balanced with the delicate subtle sweetness of honeycomb and softwood from the “ghost” whiskies of Port Dundas and Carsebridge. Other very rare whiskies bring aromas of dark fruit and berries before revealing gentle butterscotch, stewing orchard fruits and a dash of cinnamon.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Pittyvaich follows the release of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal (2019), Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen (2018) and Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora (2017). Each edition in the series offers a fleeting opportunity to savour the depth of character of whiskies from distilleries whose spirit lives on in their dwindling stocks.
