MR BLACK X WHISTLEPIG BARREL AGED COFFEE LIQUOR

July 23,2021

Australian coffee liqueur brand Mr Black has announced a limited release collaboration with Vermont whiskey distillery WhistlePig.

“The rich spice of Whistlepig Rye pairs astonishingly well with Mr Black,” said Baker. “They’re like long lost brothers, raised in different countries but united once again.”

The Barrel-Aged Coffee Liqueur expression features Mr Black’s OG coffee liqueur, made from 100 percent speciality arabica coffee. The liqueur has then been aged for 9 months in WhistlePig barrels that previously held Piggyback 100% Rye.

The ageing process needed to last long enough for the flavours of the barrel to seep into the liquor, but not so long that the spirit would lose its strength.

Since oxygen is the enemy of good coffee, the barrels were constantly topped off … a process more in line with winemaking than whiskey distilling. Baker has a former winemaker on his team, and through careful experimentation, they were able to determine that six months was reportedly the right amount of time.

The result is a liqueur with tasting notes of dark coffee, rye spice, honey, vanilla and oak with a hint of smokiness, with a warm, boozy kick to finish.

“This is one of the biggest spirits we’ve ever made,” says Baker. “It’s Mr Black turned up to 12 in terms of flavour and texture – it’s a spirit for a spirit’s drinker, intense and delicious.

“WhistlePig is a brand with such a sense of place up there in Vermont. We’re a world away down under in Australia, but working our mitts off to make it in the USA,” Baker added. “We loved the idea of bringing our home and our future together in a bottle.”

SHEEP DOG PEANUT BUTTER WHISKEY LIQUEUR

July 23,2021

UK spirits distributor, Hi-Spirits has announced the launch of Sheep Dog Peanut Butter flavoured whiskey liqueur.

Fuelled by flavoured Whiskey currently accounting for over 30% of all first-time Whiskey purchases and experiencing double-digit growth, the UK is now ready to let this brand off its leash.

Sheep Dog sets to engage with an adventurous, younger audience of experimental millennials with a love of peanut butter. The hugely versatile liqueur is best served in chilled shots, short cocktails, spritzes and hard shakes–however you like it!

Hi-Spirits believe that Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey Liqueur will be a category pioneer in the UK. The company predicts that “nuts” as a flavour will be a hot trend over the next 12 months1and that Sheep Dog is the only brand in the market that combines a sweet and salty nature with the boldness of whiskey.

Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey Liqueur offers aromas of peanut butter matched with vanilla, caramel corn and whiskey undertones before butterscotch notes come to the fore. The sweet finish is warm and semi-dry with vanilla, peanut butter, caramel, butterscotch, subtle oak, coffee, and whiskey notes.

James Johnstone, Hi-Spirits Senior Marketing Manager notes “Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey was created to satisfy peanut butter lovers and whiskey fans alike, herding all into the pack. They’ll all be barking mad and can enjoy their new favourite treat however they want to!

“We can’t wait to launch this nutty, cheeky and unpretentious brand in the UK as part of the Hi-Spirits portfolio. Is this the most exciting flavour trend to hit the UK this year? We think so.”

SIPSMITH GIN UNVEILS ALCOHOL-FREE SPIRIT FREEGLIDER

July 20,2021

UK Gin distillery Sipsmith has unveiled FreeGlider, a new alcohol-free spirit, that blends the flavours of Juniper, citrus and capsicum.

Sipsmith FreeGlider has been developed and refined numerous times, with the team testing 189 prototypes before landing on the final seven ingredient recipe.

The juniper plays a lead role in the alcohol-free spirit and is balanced with citrus and capsicum to create a unique sipping experience. The spice of capsicum replicates the warmth usually found in a gin.

“With more people than ever before choosing to moderate their alcohol consumption, combined with our continuously unwavering commitment to pioneering spirits of uncompromising quality, we were determined to create the best tasting alcohol-free option yet,” said Sipsmith Master Distiller Jared Brown.

“It’s taken a while to get it right; two years in fact near 200 prototypes to reach a taste experience that we at Sipsmith are truly happy with. We believe this is the perfect treat for those who are choosing not to drink and gives sippers a genuinely great sipping experience.”

BELGROVE UNVEILS FIG & BLACKBERRY SPICED RUM

July 20,2021

UK-based rum brand Belgrove has launched a single-origin Demerara rum from Guyana, infused with notes of fig, blackberry and cinnamon.

Aged in oak barrels, the expression is distilled using wooden pot and Coffey stills, containing a blend of rums aged up to 12 years.

“After leafing through my flavour thesaurus and after months of trialling new flavour combinations I arrived at spiced fig and blackberry, said Edmund Wood, owner and founder of Belgrove. “Rich and fruity, with gentle notes of honeycomb, raspberry and a hint of cinnamon, it was worthy of joining the Belgrove shelf.”

“We’ve imported the rum into the UK, [and] we then infuse it with real ingredients, all-natural flavours – nothing artificial goes in the bottle,” he continued.

“My hero cocktail for both Belgrove rums is an Old Fashioned with chocolate bitters, but we’ve also created some new delicious cocktails just for the spiced fig and blackberry rum.”

LOCH LOMOND TEAMS UP WITH GOLFER LEE WESTWARD

July 20,2021

Scottish Whisky distillery Loch Lomond has collaborated with English golfer Lee Westwood to create a 25-year-old single malt called the Lee Westwood Single Cask 1st Edition

Bottled at 55.3% ABV, the limited edition was distilled in 1996 and matured for 25 years in refill American oak. The 25 years ageing was chosen to mirror the number of wins Westwood has had on the European Tour.

With tasting notes of ripe peach and crisp apple, with orange zestiness, the expression has a finish that offers a caramel sweetness, toasted oak and juicy pineapple, followed by warming sugar and cinnamon spice.

“I’ve been hugely passionate about single malts for many years, so to see an outstanding whisky bearing my name is a huge privilege and a great pleasure,” said Westwood. “It’s been a pleasure to work with Michael and the team at Loch Lomond Whiskies to develop the Lee Westwood Single Cask Edition.”

Westwood is the latest golfer to become a Loch Lomond Whiskies ambassador, after Colin Montgomerie and 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke. He agreed to the partnership ahead of The Open golf tournament, which is being held this week (15-18 July) at Royal St George’s in Kent, England.

Colin Matthews, Loch Lomond Whiskies CEO, added: “We’re absolutely thrilled to add Lee to our roster of iconic golf ambassadors. He is a global star and has enjoyed tremendous success across the world and most importantly a great guy, so the perfect fit for our brand.

“We wish him the best of luck at Royal St George’s this week and hope he continues the great form he has shown recently. We look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead.”
