Scottish Whisky distillery Aberfeldy is marking 125 years with the release of a 25-year-old limited edition expression.
Presenting notes of Highland honey, wild strawberries and ripe peaches warmed by the sun, the expression on the palate offers fruit resting on a malty cereal base, with a hint of vanilla coffee and a long, satisfying finish.
Non-chill filtered with no colour added, the expression is bottled at 46% ABV. It has been matured for over two decades in a combination of refill hogsheads and refill butts before being finished for over a year in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks.
Echoing the distillery’s signature soft, honeyed, waxy character, the 25-Year-Old limited edition, in a commemorative pack, celebrates the distillery’s heritage.
Quietly crafting excellence in taste and quality in the heart of Scotland since 1898, the distillery was founded by John Alexander Dewar, one of the pioneers of modern Scotch Whisky.
At the time, no expense was spared in creating the distillery, and that same attention to detail continues to run through not only the liquid but also the brand’s efforts to build a more sustainable future.
“The walls of our charming distillery are steeped in history and heritage, standing testament to a tradition of whisky making stretching back over generations,” explained Stephanie Macleod, Aberfeldy Malt Master and five-time International Whisky Competition ‘Master Blender of the Year’.
“Aberfeldy is truly at the heart of Scotland, and as soon as you arrive, it’s easy to see why John Alexander Dewar chose this area to build his first and only distillery.”
Located in the place where Perthshire’s tallest mountain, deepest loch, and longest glen meet, the distillery is just a few miles from where his father – John Dewar Senior – was born, starting from humble beginnings before founding the family business that John Alexander took over.
“John Alexander was at the peak of his whisky-making career when he founded the distillery and he would have had his choice of some of the best locations in the Highlands,” explained Jacqui Seargeant, Heritage Manager, Bacardi. “Out of all of those, he chose Aberfeldy, a location that had all the ingredients to make a superior Highland single malt, notably a superior natural water source through the gold-rich Pitilie Burn, which runs right past the distillery.
“And there was likely a sentimental reason too, a homecoming of sorts, being just three miles from where his father was born and the family’s whisky legacy began.”
The new expression pays homage to the brand’s rich past by continuing to the tradition of exceptional malt whisky. Macleod, along with the distillery team led by Distillery Manager John MacKenzie and the team of talented Blenders, balance past, present and future in every bottle of Aberfeldy to create the consistent premium quality and taste people enjoy across the globe.
