Tatler Tells Us Which Cocktails Are In (And Which Are Out)

If keeping up with what the English elite are drinking is your jam, then this list is for you …

By: Tiff Christie|April 19,2018

English magazine, Tatler have taken a break from their busy Royals-watching schedule to bring us a list of what Cocktails are hot (or not) for 2018.

Although not aware of Tatler’s predictive cocktail prowess before this, the magazine assures us they have 309 years experience in witnessing smart boozing. But they warn us, the fashion is cocktails is fickle and what was at the top of the list last year, may just we out right now.

The casing point is one that Sydney-sider’s, who basically haven’t drunk anything else for the last half decade, will be disappointed to see – the Aperol Spritz is out. And if you are after that other mainstay of summer refreshers, the news doesn’t get any better when you read that Rosé is destined to spin down the drain as well.

And hide that Cucumber and bottle of Elderflower Liqueur because nothing is safe and the world no longer makes sense.

The good news, for everyone who no longer feels the need sleep, is that Espresso Tequila has made an appearance on the ‘in’ list, (although Espresso Martini’s are nowhere to be seen) and whisky (which women have been drinking for decades) is no longer just for men. But if Johnnie Walker putting a chick on their packaging didn’t persuade you that whiskey was worth a shot, then you ca always return to that mainstay of English gentility, the classic G&T.

So what else is in? Well at the top of the list, it seems that we’re all about to order yet another Negroni (’cause they’re so hot right now!)

The list is below –

IN

  • Negroni Currently the big-hitter, the top dog. VERY happening. Even people who don’t like them (they are super-bitter) are drinking them.
  • G&T A classic turned hip. Just don’t start brewing your own gin.
  • Straight vodka Never not cool.
  • Champagne Just because.
  • Whisky No longer just for men. In fact, we declare that all alcohol is unisex. So here’s to the big bloke sucking on a piña colada.
  • Tequila Makes you dance and, if you don’t mix, you’ll be fresh as a daisy the morning after.
  • Espresso tequila The best way to start the evening. A pre-dinner sharpener. Good work.

OUT

  • Rosé We’re calling time and banishing this fruity little upstart to the Med. It should be noted that frosé (frozen rosé) was only ever ‘in’ for those four days it was above 25 degrees in June 2017. It is very much out now.
  • Elderflower Some genius put elderflower in a gin and tonic c. 2014 and suddenly it was everywhere. If you can’t handle a stiff G&T, please turn the page.
  • Cucumber See elderflower.
  • Aperol spritz It has returned to Italy, where it will continue to be consumed in pretty little piazzas after its brief sojourn in the UK.
