Often far too easily misunderstood, rum is probably one of the most underrated liquids in the spirits world.

But one of the best ways to not only expand your rum knowledge but also your rum palate is through a subscription service.

We talk to Kevin Beament and Donna Waite of the Craft Rum Club about rum education, rum cocktails and what their subscription service has to offer.

00:01:12 – Now, what got you interested in creating a subscription service?

00:01:43 – What made you think of turning it into a subscription service though?

00:02:48 – Why do you think a subscription service that’s dedicated to rum has been so popular?

00:04:03 – Out of all the spirits categories, rum is probably the most broad, both in terms of location and distillation. Have you found that people have been easily confused by it?

00:04:50 – How important is education in what you guys do?

00:06:04 – Why do you think that people do subscribe? What is their motivation?

00:06:49 – You guys have been doing this for five years. What changes have you seen in that time?

00:09:19 – So your membership really does cover the spectrum of age and, I suppose, experience as well.

00:10:47 – You spoke earlier about tropical ageing. There are a lot of distillers in the UK, for example, that are starting up within rum. Do people get a little bit confused about tropical aged statements compared to cold-weather statements?

00:12:00 – Can you go into detail about the differences between the premium and the spiced rum sectors of the subscription.

00:14:24 – Are more people looking at the premium rums or more on the spiced rum?

00:16:02 – Now, are the boxes geared towards cocktail making?

00:17:00 – Now, you mentioned earlier that you also do a magazine that goes out. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

00:19:24 – Do you think more people are making cocktails with rum at home now?

00:19:50 – Are you finding that people are experimenting with the rums that you’re sending them a lot?

00:21:03 – You spoke a little bit about the Facebook group that you have and some general feedback that you tend to get from your subscribers. How much does that change or influence what you do for the month after, for example?

00:22:42 – You’re providing samples of some quite unique brands. How easy is it for people to get a hold of these afterwards?

00:23:12 – You mentioned earlier that people keep talking about rum being the next big thing. Has it reached that level yet?
